Four talented musicians from outer space are kidnapped by a record producer who disguises them as humans and reprograms them to forget their true identities and play soulless corporate pop as The Crescendolls. At one point, a soccer match appears on the monitor; the teams are from Japan and France. The two collaborators, Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto, are French and Japanese, respectively. This movie is magical, the soundtrack is wonderful, you feel like you are floating on air, you are “aerodynamic”. The story may seem quite simple, it is basically a “digital love” story in which the hero will have to be “harder, better, faster, stronger” to save the woman of his dreams and her music band (“Crescendolls”) from an evil music producer. Leiji Matsumoto’s animation is simply beautiful; for example, the “night vision” you get in the city on Earth (probably inspired by Tokyo) is breathtaking. But the real “superheroes” of this film are Daft Punk. These guys understood that good music can lead to the “high life”, they know how to move us, how to reveal “something about ourselves”. Let them take you on this space journey, whether it’s on the “Voyager” shuttle or not, you will find that it is “veridis quo”. It is “short circuit” (it lasts only 68 minutes, the length of the “Discovery” album), but in the end, when you come “face to face” with yourself, you can only feel that you want more, that it could never have been “too long”.
