On the whole, there is quite a lot to like here
Story
Soriya returns to Cambodia in search of herself after the death of her mother. There she finds a family she never knew and an old building full of dark secrets. After the death of her mother, a Japanese Cambodian manga artist and her boyfriend decide to travel to Cambodia to find out more about her past, but when she is confronted with strange happenings within the building that suggest something darker is going on among the residents, she must be stopped before it spreads. One of the stronger features is a really fun and engaging setup that has a lot of interconnected pieces that fit together quite well.
This buildup helps make the film a lot more fun once the ominous instincts kick in
Starting with the background that her mother died under mysterious circumstances while living in the community she had long been estranged from, this provides an opportunity to establish the motive for returning and provide sufficient background to each other. Since we’re aware of the relationship being imagined and how it affects it, the desire to reconnect with everyone after they arrive to find out why is a natural part of their reunion. It also makes the presence of the community’s behavior and rituals seem like the perfect choice to enrich this type of story, making them seem like quaint customs before gradually becoming more sinister and ominous. The longer the two stay in the community, the greater the sense of impending dread, and the increasing danger leads to even more thrills.
One of the main factors is the confusion that reigns here as very little is explained
Since the low-key nature revolves around the community’s good-natured, if slightly unhinged, behavior, or simply noticing ritual decorations left behind, this is nice enough to serve the film until it gets to the more overt sequences later on once she’s left alone in the apartment. The big sequence plays out like some sort of bizarre meal prep where the assembled family members and others she’s met in the community perform what appears to be a ritualistic ceremony meant to prepare her for a special occult ritual that soon turns into a nightmarish fever dream that she can’t tell her dream from reality is pretty impressive. With that, the remainder of this installment begins with a much darker genre outing that includes several revelations about the visions she’s been experiencing and leads to the wild finale where the dark origins of the ceremony as a whole are revealed, all about bringing the new spirit into a host body that, again, is more low-key than expected but still creates some generally creepy imagery and chases through the complex. This is all a lot of fun here because while there aren’t too many downsides here, a few issues do crop up.
These are the few minor downsides to this film
Because the first half is much more ominous and low-key than anything else, there’s not much to give away about what’s going on, and we’re instead left to focus on the haunting atmosphere of the building, as well as the surrounding threatening behavior that creates the fear almost entirely. As a result, very little is revealed about what the community is trying to do, what their ritual entails, or how it’s all supposed to be carried out, so very little is brought up. It’s not until the end that everything comes together, so there’s a chance it might be a little confusing at first to understand what’s going on. The other downside is that this build-up also allows for quite a slow first half, and very little happens other than setting up the plot threads that pay off at the end, so it takes a while for the sense of purpose to become clear.
