An absurd triptych of seemingly unrelated stories finds a mysterious intersection in this tale set somewhere between Winnipeg and Tehran. Official submission of Canada for the “Best International Feature Film” category of the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. From its cinematography and usual search for symmetry, whether static or in travel shots, and a pleasant aesthetic with a dreamlike atmosphere that underscores the universality of the setting, to its story revolving around various characters, how their lives intersect and enliven a sometimes polite, sometimes not polite dialogue so much, an influence of Wes Anderson runs through Matthew Rankin’s feature from beginning to end.

As in Anderson’s films, Rankin is interested in exploring the reality of his film, a reality full of idiosyncrasies that serve as fertile ground for comedy. An angry teacher in a class yelling at the students, one of whom claims a turkey stole his glasses; another is dressed as Groucho Marx because he wants to be a comedian; and another as a fashionista. With a comedy made up of ironic, dry and black humor, Une langue universelle manages to be hilarious whenever it wants.
Rankin’s skill manages to evoke a surrealist, dreamlike fable but also an expressive, introspective melancholy
There are many moments when its events border on absurdity or surrealism, furthering the comedy contained within but without undermining its goal of provoking thought to any depth. Elements and feelings that coalesce and bring to life a special experience between places and times, realities and dreams. In the reality of the film, for example, French, let alone English, seems to be a second language even when we are in Canada, and in its place is Persian.
The camera is sometimes static from a distance, observing their movement and how it affects the environment, rather than focusing on their faces and expressions in close-ups
They all speak it, and signs and billboards are written on it, presenting the result as something close yet distant, familiar and unknown, mingling in a culturally and demographically blind new reality. In terms of cinematography, it is often similar to Anderson’s, more in the way of framing and movement than the color palette, there is a constant will to inhabit the spaces the characters are in. It seems as though the location is as important to telling the story as the characters, and Rankin wants to make sure we are immersed in it as tourists from a foreign land.
And while we may know these cities by name, given the film’s setting and its demographic profile that doesn’t match what we know, there may be reasons to immerse ourselves in these spaces
